Taunton State Hospital

Taunton State Hospital is a 166 bed continuing & acute care facility, providing inpatient services to adults and geriatrics, as well as forensic evaluations located in Taunton, MA, 45 minutes south of Boston.

These inpatient units provide continuing care treatment for DMH-eligible patients and forensic evaluations for individuals who present through the Massachusetts judicial system. All staff psychiatrists are board-certified or pursuing board certification. The caseload for a full-time psychiatrist on one of the DMH inpatient units is approximately 16 patients. No managed care. Weekend/night call is not required, although shifts are available.

As public sector intermediate care facilities, HPP/Polaris psychiatrists do not experience the pressures of managed care. This provides a unique opportunity for psychiatrists interested in providing treatment to a diverse population of psychiatric inpatients with severe and persistent mental illness in a continuing care environment. In addition, the forensic patient population provides the opportunity to work with a team of designated forensic psychologists and to exercise one’s skills in forensic evaluation, assessment and treatment. The psychiatrist is the leader of a multidisciplinary team, and a wide range of treatment modalities are valued, including psychopharmacology, group therapy emphasizing skill-building, insight-oriented and cognitive behavioral psychotherapy, family interventions, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

The psychiatrist group is energetic, well trained, welcoming and very collegial. Most have trained in Boston-area psychiatric residency programs, including the Harvard/Cambridge Hospital, the Harvard/Longwood programs, Tufts University School of Medicine, and Boston University School of Medicine. A significant number of our current psychiatrists maintain some level of academic participation with their training programs.
